Frequently Asked Questions

Structured answers to the questions business owners ask most about payment processing and POS systems.

The best POS system depends on your industry and volume. Restaurants benefit from systems like Shift4 (formerly Shift4) or Clover Dining with kitchen display integration. Retail stores need inventory-focused systems like Clover Station. Service businesses may prefer mobile solutions. FINESSE evaluates your specific workflow before recommending a system.

Card processing costs typically run 1.5% to 3.5% per transaction depending on the pricing model, card type, and processor. Visa and Mastercard set the base fees. Processor markups, monthly fees, and equipment costs add to the total. A free rate check shows what you are really paying.

Yes. FINESSE offers month-to-month POS agreements with no early termination fees. Systems like Clover, Shift4, and Square can be deployed without long-term commitments. You own your equipment and can switch processors at any time.

You can reduce fees by switching from flat-rate to interchange-plus pricing, implementing dual pricing to offset costs, eliminating hidden monthly charges, and negotiating based on your processing volume. A free rate check identifies exactly where you are overpaying.

Switching processors typically takes 3 to 5 business days. This includes application approval, equipment setup, and staff training. Most transitions involve zero downtime. You can keep your existing bank account and merchant ID in most cases.

In 2026, average restaurant processing fees range from 2.6% to 3.5% per transaction. Interchange fees account for 1.5% to 2.5%, with processor markups adding 0.3% to 1.0%. Restaurants processing over $25,000 monthly typically qualify for interchange-plus pricing.

Interchange-plus pricing separates the base interchange fee (set by card networks) from the processor's markup. This provides full transparency into what you pay and why. It is typically 0.3% to 0.8% cheaper than flat-rate pricing for businesses processing over $10,000 monthly.

Hidden POS fees include PCI non-compliance charges, statement fees, batch processing fees, minimum monthly fees, and early termination penalties. These fees are often buried in contract fine print. A rate check identifies every fee you are currently paying.

In many cases, yes. Hardware compatibility depends on the terminal and processor. Clover devices are generally processor-locked, but most standalone terminals (Dejavoo, PAX) can be reprogrammed. FINESSE evaluates your existing hardware before recommending new equipment.

Not all POS systems require contracts. Toast typically requires 2 to 3 year agreements. Square and Clover (through independent agents like FINESSE) offer month-to-month terms. Always ask about contract length, auto-renewal clauses, and early termination fees before signing.

Dual pricing displays two prices at the point of sale: a cash price and a card price. The card price includes a service fee that offsets processing costs. Unlike surcharging, dual pricing is legal in all 50 states and complies with Visa and Mastercard rules when properly implemented.

Yes. Dual pricing is legal in all 50 U.S. states. It differs from surcharging, which is restricted in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Puerto Rico. Dual pricing displays two prices rather than adding a fee at checkout.

Surcharging adds a fee at checkout on top of the listed price. Dual pricing shows two prices upfront, one for cash and one for card. Surcharging is restricted in some states. Dual pricing is compliant nationwide and is generally better received by customers.

Same-day deposit means funds from your transactions are deposited into your bank account the same business day. FINESSE offers same-day funding through select processors for businesses that need faster access to their revenue.

The best restaurant POS systems include Shift4 (tableside ordering, kitchen displays), Clover Dining (flexible configurations), and Union POS (mobile ordering, tab management). The right choice depends on your restaurant type, order volume, and whether you need online ordering integration.

Evaluate payment processors based on pricing transparency, contract terms, equipment options, customer support quality, and industry specialization. Request a rate check comparing your current rates to proposed rates. Avoid processors that require long-term contracts or charge early termination fees.

PCI compliance is a set of security standards required for all businesses that accept credit cards. Non-compliance can result in monthly fees of $20 to $100 and increased liability for data breaches. All FINESSE clients receive compliance support at no extra charge.

Yes. Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android lets you accept contactless payments using your smartphone. No additional hardware required. FINESSE sets up mobile payment solutions through Square, Clover Go, and other mobile-ready platforms.

Common Toast alternatives include Clover (flexible, no long-term contract through FINESSE), Shift4 (restaurant-focused with dual pricing), and Square (no monthly fees). Each offers different strengths. FINESSE provides a side-by-side comparison based on your specific restaurant needs.

No. FINESSE offers month-to-month agreements with no early termination fees. You can cancel at any time. This contrasts with many POS providers that require 2 to 3 year contracts with termination penalties ranging from $250 to $500.
